I just saw the movie Him. It fits into these genres of movies that are very cinematic with a high focus on good cinematography, visuals, visual effects, realism and drama. This was a movie with a fair amount of dramatic events and visuals.
I’d say it fits into the category of movies and tv shows like Uncut Gems, Good Time, Anora, The Substance, The Serbian Film and The Boys? How so? Well, Good Time, The Boys and Uncut Gems have a lot of close ups and interesting color corrections. Good Time and Uncut Gems are also very fast paced and stressful. Him was also like The Boys, The Substance, The Serbian Film and maybe even The Terrifier 3 in regards to violence. I won’t spoil it but there were certainly moments in the movie of abrupt, dramatic, up close and detailed violence. It made me cringe sometimes, but I guess all those scenes added to the shock value and entertainment in a way.
The Substance had this kind of thing too. Like with showing the main character with a huge cut in her back when another character came out of there. It was shown so abruptly and it’s just something that you never see in real life or movies so that’s why its crazy shock value and entertainment. It’s like in real life when you encounter something so horrible but you can’t look away out of interest. The Serbian Film had this kind of stuff as well. But that movie got a 4.9 out of 10 on IMDb and Him has a 5.5 right now. The Serbian Film certainly did better if we’re comparing which one had the grossest and most insane shock value.
But yeah. The movie is about a football player who wants to be the best. Then he gets ambushed on the field and hit in the head. Then he gets a concussion and is invited to train with the current goat in football (Marlon Wayans). A lot of crazy shit happens, like violent training, drugs, hallucinating, flashbacks, killings, cult shit and more.
I really don’t know why the reviews are so bad. People are giving it a 2/10 or 3/10 even a 4/10. I think it’s easily a 6/10. I personally am a person who doesn’t care for the story of movies that much. As long as it’s decent with a lot of exciting moments, action, and visuals, I like it.
I also just like edgy movies in general. I highly dislike movies/tv shows/video games that have a lot of stationary scenes and dialgoue. I knew going into watching this movie that it’d be the type where things ‘go wrong’ or go ‘extreme’. The movie Together from this year also had some extreme or edgy moments too which I liked. Also, this movie, Him, was like Anora because of the realism. Anora had an indie and realistic vibe. The two main characters in it talked to each other in a realistic, intimate and personable way similar to in real life. Him had some of that. Anora also had a bluish color correction that Him had similar to as well. I also liked how in Him, Marlon Wayans was acting crazy and had good acting. Lastly, i’ll say that I liked how in this movie, there were party scenes. I love party scenes.
Overall, a 6/10 or 3/5. Good visuals, eeriness, excitement, acting, and gore. The cult and devi/satan/demon stuff was interesting as well. It could have been better though if it went harder and faster sometimes. But.. that would mean more intense violence and other stuff which might have turned people off. So, I guess that’s why I understand it was the way it was. Pretty good film.
Oh yeah, and it sucks that some of the images they used to advertise the film with were not in the actual movie. Some parts of the trailer were not in the film either.
