Why does everything have to do with money?

For example, i’m riding in a car trying to enjoy my surroundings. Every single billboard I pass has to do with selling you something or buying something.

For example:

  1. “Sell your house!”
  2. “Get a pool installed!
  3. Duchess Restaurant Ads
  4. McDonald’s Ads
  5. Burger King

We dismiss overthinking about it because just hearing what’s going on sounds normal as hell.

But think about it a little more: EVERYTHING has to do with money. That’s not normal. EVERYWHERE around us is money based. You go to a nice city and drive around. 95% of everything around us is stores or billboards or signs to buy/sell something.

But, yes, I know rich people wouldn’t care, I know.

I’m just saying, having everything be about money is sad. I don’t know alternatives to fix this problem though. And if you can’t beat em, join em.

But wait, there will be an occasional non-monetary ad, what are those about?

  1. “Don’t drink and drive”
  2. “Don’t leave your marijuana around, as your children might consume it mistakenly.
  3. “Don’t vape”
  4. “Don’t let kids enjoy alcohol.”

I almost never see billboards that aren’t about selling you something. I can’t even remember one.

Ok ok I get it. So, what ads would I rather see? I don’t know, maybe:

  1. Ads for state parks or hiking trails
  2. Ads for free events, like bringing your dog to a doggy park or something.
  3. Ads for treatment of mental health problems or physical problems ( that aren’t gimmicks and are affordable )

Ok ok yes I know, there are ( atleast in my town ), small signs on the ground about stuff like Tag Sales and Walk-athons and other free events. I’ll also see the occasional ad about going to a pain center, or using ‘lose it’ or something about mental health. Only rarely though.

And tag Sales are still about money. You’re buying stuff from people.

Walk-athons are usually about raising money for a cause.

Ok ok ok I get it,

Well then you might say that state parks and hiking trails and doggy parks have to do with money aswell, because the government pays money to maintain them. YES! But atleast it’s in nature! And the civilians don’t have to pay to get in!

Atleast the message is pure and good-hearted, not ads asking if I want to buy a house or pool or car or fast food! Some people don’t have the money for a house or pool. Other people don’t like being reminded of fast food because they’re trying to lose weight.

Therefore, all the above ads make me usually feel like shit!

Moving, on, what about on computers and mobile devices or even TV commercials.

Same shit. Mobile ads are always about fucking travel apps, renting air bnbs, going on vacation, or buying fast food. There will be an occasional AD for anti-vaping which I appreciate.

Don’t even get me started on tracking and cross-platform recommendations.

Long story short, google stores cookies, which basically contain a shit load of data on me. Data such as, for example, when I do my most searching during the day, what sites do I usually go on and at what time, what products do I shop for, what videos do I look at, everything!

And then, the cherry on top is that they GIVE all of that PERSONAL data to any other website who wants it.

Soon enough, everything you do on the internet is targeted to your habits and data so that they know exactly what to show you to maximize engagement times on the sites or to maximize the probability i’ll buy something!

Yes, you might say, you can disable cookies and third party tracking and shit. Well, if you do all that, i’m pretty sure that means you remove all the sites you’re logged into. It will sign you out of everything. So that means cookies are stored no matter what, if you choose to login to a site?

So you get the whole package. You either get to login and save necessary data as well as allow the site to spy on your habits and patterns or you get no customization on a site at all ( using your account on it, etc ).

I might be wrong though.. i’ll come back to that.

Also, wait a second, besides ads for state parks and hiking trails and other free activities, I don’t think there are many other non-monetary based events or things for us humans. I’ll come back to that.

Anyway, yeah, TV ads also suck. Showing fast food and car ads and perfumes and clothes or even ads for other TV Shows while you’re watching another TV show! Lol.

Like I get it, in reality, ads for products appeal to the majority of people. It might in fact be that these kind of ads are actually more engaging and appealing to people, that’s why the majority are like this.

But, thinking objectively, this is not healthy. This is not a new thing, I get it. People have been obsessed with materialism and consumerism for long as well, but I still like talking about it.

Programming everyone to think money and products are the most important and fulfilling things isn’t healthy.

I digress though, because some product ads aren’t too bad..like to eat vegetables or for therapy. Idk.

Lastly, I won’t even get into ads on computers. Fortunately I use an ad blocker and never have to subject myself to that.

I would appreciate it if adblockers found a way to get rid of ads on Twitch.tv though. That’d be dope.

Peace.
